View Full Version : OT: Winter Hobbies?
trucknut 01-24-2004, 10:15 AM Just curious what your winter hobbies are, when not working on your trucks of course :)
Here's a reef tank I recently setup (about 2 months old now) and is really starting to take shape.
What are your winter hobbies?

1967k10 01-24-2004, 10:43 AM It looks like you found Nemo!
Palf70Step 01-24-2004, 11:55 AM Looks cool. Most of my time right now is spent with school, but I like to do models, mess with computers, and like working somewhat outside in the yard...we can still do that here in the winter :D.

Unfortunately, since I'm married, doing models is out for me :(
Apparently all I do is read message boards. I would be working on my truck projects in my heated oversize garage but I'm still waiting on my cab to be done *sigh*
Nice tank setup, Piston. I used to do cichlids, but they had to go when I moved to MA. I promised myself I'd build a new setup when I got here but 3+ years later, I haven't :( ... and I may be moving away in the near future so I don't want to set anything up right now. I've got several large Eheim pumps and some 3 and 4' lamps just sitting here growing old. Oh well... maybe some day.

I'm not the "aggression" type. I actually only kept meat-eaters... the more gentle of the cichlids, though even they scrapped from time to time. The key with these guys is to have PLENTY of tank and PLENTY of rocks so they each can have a place they can call their own.
Running with the cichlids (I had about a dozen... all different species, to give me some great color on my stark white and black tank) were 6 synodontis multipunctatus, like this guy (not mine)--

They are fascinating to watch... I've considered building a tank with a few dozen of these cats and nothing else.
1969 GMC 01-25-2004, 02:16 AM winter hobbies...now that schools back up, my hobbies seem to be doing the endless HW from my Principles of Technical Writing course. Oh, and working. My truck has needed wheel bearings for a while and I simply have no time to put them in (I am on here alot, but lets compare: 70*F inside, -5*F in the garage [which is full of crap any way]).
Aquariums are sweet...when I was 13, I setup a 25 gallon freshwater tank with native Ohio fish (What is "A Redneck"? That is correct for 200). Bluegill, bass, even a couple perch and some bullheads. Wellllll...the bullheads ate everything, even if it was twice their size. Then they committed suicide by jumping out the open lid at night and suffocating on the floor.
My wife is the designated fish killer at our house. I work on vehicles year round because I refuse to borrow money to buy a new vehicle and I am too cheap to pay someone else to work on my crap.;)
Landon4421 01-26-2004, 10:56 PM First off Garrett, sweet tank man ! I will be showing Kevin Nemo in the morning ! :D He will get a kick out of it.
As for my winter time hobbies, well it really is not winter here :D J/K it gets cold in the garage ! Anyway here latly I have been going out with my friends and riding 3 wheelers and stuff on the weekends. :D It is a blast ! I don't have one but my buddys share once in a while. :D Here last week I go me a new motor for my savage 21 ! :3gears: It is a little bit better than the stock motor, I took it our to the river this last weekend and broke in the motor, Then proceded to tear up the river banks, mabe 20-30 tall, no water this time of year ! :D Kind of sucked I did not have anyone to take pictures, mabe next weekend, If my clutch comes in:eek: It is fun, I really miss the model thing mabe i need to go out and get one. I have not worked on the truck in like at least a month  Have a good night guys !

:bigdrink:
The wife has told me I have too many hobbies, so I am planning on cutting back on the odd numbered ones! :bandito:
dubie 01-27-2004, 11:40 AM Around here we go ice fishing, ski dooing, skating, play hockey, take the kids sliding etc...... lots to do in the winter, if you dress for it. I tend to work on the truck more in the winter than I do in summer . Our summers are kinda short and I want to cruise as much as possible in the heat, then store it for the cold months
Sams_71 01-27-2004, 11:43 AM Damn, I was beginning to feel all alone there Fred. Everyone else seems so ambitious I thought I might be lagging. 'Cause other than my trucks, drinking beer and shootin' pool I couldn't come up with anything else. Unless re-learning shuffleboard counts!
:worthy:  :smoker:
Oh hell, how could I forget my favorite pasttime. (See below)
:bouncy:
Fred T 01-27-2004, 12:52 PM Sam - What's your opinion on the Chiefs hiring back Gunther? I'm thinking he'll do a lot better now than before since he won't have to deal directly with Peterson.
Sams_71 01-27-2004, 04:13 PM Shoot, I just hope Gun can get along with Dick. Their personalities are so far apart. And I read that Saunders got an extension on his contract too so Gun will be under him as well. He was a real good defensive coach for them before, Peterson was more or less pressured by the fans to promote him to head coach when he couldn't get his first choice of Vermeil who was kinda busy with the Rams at the time.
OK, time to thin out my junk for the big move...
I've got some aquarium items I'm posting on ebay if anyone is interested in such things--

68 Stepside 02-07-2004, 09:33 AM Here's my winter hobby....
