View Full Version : What's this hole for?

On the door, just below the wing window? I don't have a picture of my new door with the hole, so I'm shamelessly borrowing FuelCellGuy's door to point it out... I circled it on the picture - I need to decide whether I want to fill this when the truck gets repainted or not.
A screw goes there to reenforce the door where the wing vent passes through the inner and outer skins. It's a 72-only deal and is on the repro'd doors as well. The screw pinches the skins together.
It took GM engineers 5 years to figure out that this area was prone to cracking due to the forces exerted when the wing vent was opened and closed. This was their solution.

so, having said that... Is there a screw available that goes in there to reinforce the door, and I'm guessing there should be a corresponding threaded socket on the outer skin somewhere? I'll pop a countersunk SS allen head in that sucker.
- not trying to be lazy, it's just that the truck isn't here so I can take a look at it, and you seem to be familiar with it.
Their is a special ferral (sp) that surrounds the head of the screw. The screw passes thru a clip to hold it in place. I can't think of this clip's name but it's the same design as the clips that hold the headlight bezels to the fromt fenders/grille.
You should be able to locate these pieces from any junk 72 door.
