View Full Version : Hydraulic clutch about mounted

Been working the last few evenings on mounting the hydraulic clutch cylinder on my firewall. First time I drilled the holes the cylinder was sitting a little too high and when I worked the pedal I found that the push rod was not going to be able to cycle properly.
Last night got to work some more and moved the cylidner down a little more on the firewall and looks like I have it positioned correctly. Luckily the shim I have for the clutch cylinder covers up the hole I drilled that doesn't work.
A bit more fiddling to do and I should be ready to paint the firewall so I can finally start putting my truck together to go to the paint shop. And yes, I have decided to farm out the paint - I finally decided I don't have the time or patience at this point to try to learn painting. Leave that to the pros this time.

Good to hear. You know it has to be on the road in time for the Winfield show in June.

Yea, that is something that has been on my mind. I'm trying, just need to make more free time somehow.

Got the clutch rod threaded and mounted and attached to the pedal and what do you know, it cycles properly! Not a biggie, but hey, it's one step closer to being done. Now to get the hydroboost brake setup mounted. The shim was necessary to get the cylinder rod positioned so it could cycle correctly.

Need to cut down the clevis pin still. Had to grind a little of the pedal frame to allow the heim joint room.

ooohhhh you're gonna like that hydraulic clutch. I did one a while back with a 5spd in a 71 and its perfect. Makes driving a old clutch setup much easier.

I'm really looking forward to the hydroboost brakes too. After driving with manual brakes and 35" tires, this is a welcome upgrade. Plus, I don't think I will mind the days waiting at a stop light and noticing I'm slowly rolling backwards cause I wasn't standing on the brake pedal.

QUESTION. . . . . .
Why hydroboost instead of a vaccum system?

The whole setup was available off the 1989 1 ton that I got the 454 from. Just made since as it was all there.

Ah, I never figured a hydroboost came factory with a gas engine. I just figured they were mainly on the desiles.

Careful you don't put your head through the winshield the first time you use the new brakes.

Changed the way I connected the hydraulic clutch rod from a Heim joint to a clevis rod end. Here's an updated pic.

Last night got the hydroboost brake cylinder mounted and it's pushrod attached to the brake bedal. I think the clevis rod end is going to be stronger especially on the brake pedal as it attaches to both sides of the brake pedal.

I'm not familiar with Hydroboost. Is it powered by a pump on the engine? or use the existing PS pump? Or???
Where would you normally find this kind of setup?

Many Heavy duty trucks use Hydroboost Brakes. This type of power assist braking is achieved through the use of hydraulic power. This power usually comes from the power steering pump.
Nice conversion work YJ!

Thanks, it's been a fun project. This setup is often seen on 1 ton trucks. I remember hearing that some car, maybe it was a mid 80's Oldsmobile had these too.

Jack, you are going disk in the front of your truck after all this work, right? Your gonna need them with all that 454 power!

Disks will come when I find a Dana 60 frontend. I'm not looking hard for one, figure that is the best way to find something - don't be looking for it and you fall on to good deals.
Plus, that really needs to be a next years project - I've tackled way more than I should have!
