How many gallons of fuel will fit in the fuel tank behind the seat of out 1971 chevy truck? I have never really looked into it, and Sunday I put like 16.3 gallons of fuel. I always thought they were like 16 gallon tanks but mabe I am wrong. Thanks in advance, Landon

I'll check my owner's manual when I get home but I think I've gotten pretty close to 20 in my 67. Come to think of it it's on 'E' right now and I have to fill it up before I go home so I'll know for sure.

Well, the 71 manual says 20.2 gallons. I only got about 16.5 in the 67 though. Guess I wan't that empty. Unless there's a difference between the two years.

Thanks Sams_71, it is good to know that when my truck reads empty I have a few more gallons to get to the gas station. :D

Checked the 67's manual and found that it came standard with an 18½ gallon tank and there was an optional 20½ gallon.

I will have to look into that a little more. I am pritty sure that Jenna's truck is bone stock and probally did not come with the
20 1/2 gallon tank. But you never know. Thanks again for the help. Landon

i'll just throw in my 2 cents here...i believe in my owner's handbook, it says the tank holds 21 or so gallons. i filled mine up today, 20.5 gallons (and it was totally empty before, i ran out of gas in the parking lot). no optional gas tank indicated on the GB sticker.

Don't know how many gallons my truck holds, but what I do know about my truck is that when it says E it means it. My truck died once while going to the gas station and that needle did not go past the E. There is no reserve on my truck.

I know I have driven to the gas station once and bumped 21.75 gallons in it. The owner's manual said (for '70) approximately 21 gallons.

Hmm...maybe that's how they are meant to be?
my truck's will go about a 1/4 tank past both E and F.
also, when the needle hits "E" it actually means I have 8 gallons left. miscalculating this = bad. thats why I ran out of gas in the parking lot.

Tonight I ran my 67 down to where I could see some of the white line on the 'E' to the right of the needle. Then I filled it up, it took 18.1 gallons, and I could some see the white line for 'F' on the left side of the needle. Not bad accuracy for an odd collection of parts and wiring.

drained my tank out today ... to replace the rubber fuel lines... check the gauge while i knew it was empty ... my needle was dead on E ... surprisenly accurate...

I think the official word from the GM resto packs is "Approx 20 gallons" for 67-70 and "Approx 21 gallons" for 71/72. The 71/72 tanks were vented differently and had fuel return lines.

depends on year, but i know for 67-70 GM states 20.5

71-72 beginning of fuel system related emissions equipment affected this value

as some of you have found out

good luck
