View Full Version : Anyone do sheetmetal work?
I'm looking to get a radiator shroud/thingie made. If this is something you do, let me know and I'll get you detailed dimensions so I can get a price from you. Here are the basics...
overall 18.625 x 28.250 with lip at top and bottom to allow mounting. Lip is 3" deep with a .5" turndown at the end. Actual fan mount area is beveled up from overall dimensions above into a rectangle of 14" x 24". That gets me a small amount of funneling of incoming air.
Lemme know. Thanks,
Kenneth

I can probably fix you up. Let me know what thickness you want it and I'll give you a quote. I think it would look cool in aluminum with heli-arced seams. Let me know. FuelCellGuy

I'd be interested in a price too. Give me some specs on that thing.
Is it for a standard truck, nothing special?
Aluminum would be cool looking. As always, I have to pay attention to price (I'm already in plenty of trouble with my wife as is :( )...
The design on this is fairly simple in that it slips over the stock 4 core radiator (the one I bought from Radiator Barn (www.radiatorbarn.com). Basically, it would slip over the bottom of the radiator, then it would take a little friendly persuasion to get that .5" lip up over the top of the radiator. The 3" depth will let the whole unit stand off the radiator by about .5". On the small lip that catches the radiator top and bottom, I'd shoot some self-tappers in... they'd hit that channel on the top and bottom of the radiator itself. The whole thing fits in between the tanks so there shouldn't be any interference with hose inlets, petcock, or transmission lines.
The reason for the bevel is because I figured a flat piece of metal there would be less inclined to route air through the fans. Not sure if this is critical or not, but it would probably add stiffening as well, which would probably be important on that big of a flat surface.
Thickness? Hmmm... What do you use on the fuel cells? This thing has to span a couple of feet while holding up 2 fans. I'm just guessing here... 14 gauge???
Also, since I'm way up here in New England hell, I'll need shipping too. I'm at ZIP 02081.
Oh, and the holes I'm showing are CURRENTLY 11" diameter, but I'll need to get an exact measurement from the fans as well as their proximity to one another.
Let me know. Thanks!

OT ? Are the electric fans as good as the stock one ? I was wondering, I am far from getting the radiator in the truck. But if the electric fan would be better it would be something to look into. I know you will gain a few horses with the electric fan, but do the cool as well as the stock on? Thanks.:p

Generally speaking, an electric fan will outperform a mechanical fan in all aspects. They are standard equipment on just about every car currently made. Having said that, there's nothing really wrong with mechanical fans on these old trucks.

As long as you run a fan shroud, you'll pull more air (at idle) than a mechanical, which is where you need it most. But as I said, make sure you use a fan shroud... You MUST pull air from all parts of the radiator or you'll run into problems.
FuelCellGuy, does this look doable? If so, I'd appreciate a price quote... that way I know how many 7-11's to knock off ;)

Oh great, now I'm gonna want one of these built for me on top of the fuel cell FuelCellGuy is building for me. 7-11, now there's an avenue to fund the truck I hadn't thought of - I'd probably screw that up though!

Yeah, problem is though... you can usually only get $20-50 per store so you've got to find a town that has lots of them :(

I'm also interested. :) That sounds like a good idea! Thank you guys for sheding a little light on the subject. I had never thought of the pulling more air while sitting thing. I am still a rookie. But thanks to this board and the other one I am learning a lot. :D
XXL, will that fit the ratiator of a '67 4X4?
I am not sure if they are the same or not.
Need money!!! Take a Sunday ride out in the country ! I am thinking about it, aluminum cans / beer bottles. These young cowboys / and the fast and the ferious kids in our area leave them every Friday / Saterday nights. out on the back roads around here. It free $$$ So I will probally need a week to round up the cash.:p
